Puzzle: What is meaning of different lines with different colors?

For quite long time, I used to wonder about different types of lines marked on the road. One can see continuous yellow lines (---), white lines, (---), alternate white lines (- - - -). What is the meaning of each type of line?

From what I recall of my RSP training in school, a continuous white line at the center of the road/lane suggest that you cannot cross over the line strictly. i.e. no overtaking is allowed.
A dashed white line means you still need to follow lanes but overtaking is allowed. It means you are temporarily allowed to cross the line e.g while overtaking, provided the traffic is clear on the other side and that you again come back to your original lane..
Yellow lines, I do not know...
i welcome anybody to confirm/correct my understanding if required :)

My understanding about the white lines is similar to that of blogmaster. The yellow lines (single or double) are supposed to be along paved areas where parking is restricted or not allowed at all. Having said, PMC does what it likes. Recently I saw pictures of yellow lines a good 4-5 feet from pavement!!

The reason this question came to my mind was, for quite long time I observe that on FC Road and JM Road, many 4 wheelers are blocking the road and thus violating this rule.
